Introduction:
Nirgundi is an Ayurvedic remedy produced from the dried leaves of Vitex negundo (Family Verbenaceae), a large aromatic shrub or small tree that grows up to 4.5 m in height and is found throughout the country up to 1500 m in the outer Himalayas.1 It is generally known as Five leaved chaste trees, and it belongs to a broad family of plants, shrubs, and trees with over 75 genera and nearly 2500 species.2
In Sanskrit, Vitex Negundo is known as Nirgundi and Sindhuvara. Nirgundi is already used in traditional systems of medicine such as Ayurveda, Unani, and Siddha to treat pain, headache, inflammation, leukoderma, spleen enlargement, rheumatoid arthritis, gonorrhoea, bronchitis, fever, cold, and cough.2 Pesticidal activity has been observed in the leaves of V.negundo.
Uses of Nirgundi:
Nirgundi leaves are antibacterial, laxative, antioxidant, anticonvulsant, hypoglycemic, and anti-inflammatory.2 The roots, barks, and fruits are also medicinal. Nirgundi roots are one of the constituents of the herbal composition 'Dashamularishta,' which is used to treat colitis, dysentery, diarrhoea, flatulence, fever, vomiting, and colic.2 The leaves include the alkaloid nisindine, flavonoids such as flavones, luteolin-7-glycoside, an essential oil, and components such as vitamin C and carotene, which are responsible for many biological actions.2
Benefits of Nirgundi
1.Nirgundi for Infections :
Antibacterial activity of Nirgundi essential oil was demonstrated against B. subtilis, S. aureus, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa.2
This anti-bacterial effect is attributed to the phytoconstituents d-guaiene, germacrene D, and hexadecenoic acid present in nirgundi.2
A novel flavone glycoside found in leavd extracts displays antifungal action against Cryptococcus neoformans and Trichophyton mentagrophytes.
2.Nirgundi for Pain:
The anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving qualities of fresh nirgundi leaves have been connected to a reduction in prostaglandin synthesis.2
The pain-relieving activity of V. negundo extract was compared to that of aspirin and meperidine in an animal model.
The study found that Nirgundi leaves had significant analgesic efficacy and can be used as an adjuvant therapy with standard analgesics.
3.Nirgundi for Liver:
V. negundo seed extracts reduced serum levels of aspartate transaminase and alanine transaminase.3
The alcoholic seed extract also protected the liver against carbon-tetrachloride (CCL4)-induced liver damage.
4.Nirgundi for Arthritis:
The heated leaf is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis discomfort and sprains.
You can also utilize the oil made from the leaves.
5.Nirgundi for Skin:
Nirgundi leaf juice may help with bacterial and parasite skin problems.
Nirgundi seeds are used to treat skin conditions and leprosy.
6.Nirgundi for Prevents premature hair greying
Nirgundi offers good benefits for healthy hair development since it is high in rejuvenating antioxidants such as flavonoids and terpenoids, as well as vitamins C and E.
Nirgundi oil extracts are often combined with sesame oil and applied externally on the scalp as well as the tresses, from root to tip, vigorously massaging to allow it to penetrate the deeper layers.
Nirgundi, blessed with revitalizing "Keshya" powers that strengthen and structure hair, nourishes the hair roots, i.e. follicles, and prevents the premature appearance of grey hairs, delivering a long, dense, and lustrous mane.
