What is Copper Sulphate (Blue Thothia):
Blue Thothia, also known as Neela Thotha in Hindi, is a chemical that is employed in the production of pigments, metal polish, and food preservation. It can be made by treating copper metal with hot, concentrated sulfuric acid or by treating copper oxides with the same solution.
Thothia Blue OR You can make copper sulphate by processing copper metal with hot, concentrated sulfuric acid or by heating copper oxides with sulfuric acid that has been diluted. The copper atom in a CuSO4 molecule may be shown to be in the +2 oxidation state.
Copper sulphate is most frequently found as its pentahydrate, which has the chemical formula CuSO4.5H2O. This type is distinguished by its vivid blue hue. It should be noted, though, that the anhydrous form of this salt is a white powder.
USES:
The chemical combination copper sulphate, popularly known as blue vitriol, is frequently employed as a fungicide. This chemical has a variety of applications in both business and academia.
This compound's pentahydrate, CuSO4.5H2O, is utilised as a fungicide because it may kill a variety of fungus. Benedict's solution and Fehling's solution, which are used to test for reducing sugars, also include copper sulphate.
KMnO4 (potassium permanganate) solutions can be combined with copper sulphate to create an oxidant that can be used to convert iron from its ferrous state into its ferric state by adding hydrogen peroxide or sodium hydroxide solution to the mixture. Copper sulphate is used to test blood samples for diseases like anaemia.
Because copper sulphate solutions have a high electrical resistance value of roughly 4000000 ohms per centimetre squared at 20 oCelsius temperature, they can be utilised as resistive elements liquid resistors. Since it can also lend colour to cement, ceramics, and other metals, it can also be utilised as a decorative element.
BENEFITS:
Neela Thotha is a naturally occurring chemical that may be mined and refined into a powdered form and is present in the earth's crust. Since it was first approved for use as a pesticide in 1956, this chemical has been used to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi on fruits, vegetables, and other crops. Fungi's proteins are bound by copper sulphate, which damages and kills the cells.
This is also how the formation of a protective fungicide, known as a Bordeaux mixture, occurs when Blue Thothia is mixed with lime and water. In addition to avoiding athlete's foot (a fungal infection that develops in between the toes in warm regions), copper sulphate is also used to help with public health and safety by eliminating algae and germs caused by developing algae in swimming pools. In order to prevent the germs from being able to live on the flooring for an extended period of time, it is mixed into the mixtures of the flooring in showers, locker rooms, and swimming pools.
