A elegant, slender, perennial palm with a trunk that reaches a height of about 25 meters, Chikni Supari is grown in the coastal regions of Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and other tropical and subtropical nations at elevations up to 1000 meters. Fruits are single seeded berries that have an orange or crimson seed that is 3.8–5 cm long, smooth, and covered in a fibrous pericarp. Fruits are ovoid, outwardly pale, reddish-brown to light yellowish-brown, and marked with a network of paler lines. At the foot of the seed, clinging fibers of the mesocorp and pieces of a silvery brittle endocarp are also common. Hard seed with brownish tissue that alternates with whitish tissue, ruminating endosperm, distinctive aroma, and astringent flavor.
