Sapindus mukorossi (Reetha) is a large deciduous tree in the Sapindaceae family. It is also known as soapberry, soapnut, washnut, aritha, dodan, and dodani.
Reetha has been used for centuries in countries like Japan and China. It has been used in Japan as a life-prolonging pericarp (the part of a fruit that contains the seeds) and in China as a fruit for sickness management. The herb is well known for its traditional medicinal benefits. Reetha is found in the steep areas of the Himalayas in India.
Reetha fruit has been used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine for decades. Reetha is found in several Ayurvedic shampoos and cleansers.
Therapeutic Uses:
Reetha saponins (the fruit's pericarp) have contraceptive effects. Ayurvedic therapy employs Reetha to remove tan and freckles from the skin. It is also used to clean the hair and remove grease from the scalp.Reetha is traditionally used to eradicate lice from the scalp and as an expectorant (a substance that increases sputum discharge via the airways).
Acne, excessive salivation, chlorosis (iron deficiency anaemia), migraines, epilepsy, eczema, and psoriasis are all treated with reetha. Reetha powder can also be used to treat tooth decay, constipation, the common cold, nausea, and arthritis.
Benefits of Reetha for Contraception:
Reetha's saponins have spermicidal (sperm-destroying) properties, making it beneficial as a contraceptive. Human spermatozoa (sperm cells) suffer morphological (structural) changes when exposed to saponins. These morphological changes disrupt the sperm cells. It has been used in a contraceptive cream due to its spermicidal activity.
Benefits of Reetha for Anti-Bacterial Activity:
When fed orally to animals, Reetha extract suppressed the growth of the bacteria Helicobacter pylori. The extract was also successful in eradicating Helicobacter pylori infection in an in-vivo study.
Benefits of Reetha for Liver:
In an animal investigation, reetha extract was proven to preserve the liver. Extract of the fruit pericarp of Reetha showed liver-protective properties in the rat model. The extract may preserve the liver by safeguarding hepatocytes (liver cells).
Reetha's Wound Healing Advantages
Oil derived from Reetha seeds displayed wound healing capabilities in animal studies. The oil also had anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-bacterial properties. Anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant action was discovered to be the therapeutic benefit of skin wound healing. The vitamin E in the oil provides the antioxidant advantage. Reetha seed oil has the ability to improve skin wound healing in humans.
Reetha Benefits for Hair
Reetha is widely used in cosmetics, including shampoo. As a foaming agent, shampoos contain dried fruit powder. Because it produces a natural lather, it can be used as a hair cleanser and tonic as well as a skin cleanser and tonic. It is also used to remove lice from your hair.
